Things to remember if you attempt to rescue a distressed swimmer:
- Stay calm and focused. Make sure someone calls 911.
- Extension rescues: Extend a pole, a ring bouy, a rescue tube, to the distressed swimmer.
- Calm him or her.
- Always keep the rescue device between you and the victim when nearing them.
- Panic causes more drowning than most anything. The rescue tube or other rescue device in itself adds much security and calm for the victim.
