Things to remember if you attempt to rescue a distressed swimmer:

  1. Stay calm and focused.  Make sure someone calls 911.
  2. Extension rescues:  Extend a pole, a ring bouy, a rescue tube,  to the distressed swimmer.
  3. Calm him or her.
  4. Always keep the rescue device between you and the victim when nearing them.
  5. Panic causes more drowning than most anything.  The rescue tube or other rescue device in itself adds much security and calm for the victim.
