6 years experience teaching!

Serving: Austin, Cedar Park, Lago Vista, Jonestown, Leander

I have loved the water since I was able to walk. I have traveled and lived in three countries: China, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates. my time living in these countries has provided me with various teaching opportunities and also exposure to different cultures. Students I had instructed have been from China, the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Korea, and India. The summer of 2013 was when I became interested in teaching swim lessons to learners of all ages. I had previously served on the aquatics team of Lifeline Aquatics, Safeguard Aquatics, the Lancaster Family YMCA, Twin Lakes Family YMCA, Lititz Recreation Center, and Waterloo Swimming. As I worked with these aquatic organizations, my love of teaching swimming to all learners increased.

I look forward to working with you and your family to help you make swimming an enjoyable experience as the summer heat comes upon us.

Allen Clare, Lifeguard, Swim Instructor

Bronx

15 years experience!

Serving the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut areas of Greater NYC.

Ever since a child I was always in the water. Being born in urban New York City my mother wanted me to learn how to swim. After completing all the learn to swim program levels, I decided to push myself further and become a lifeguard. Though I enjoy guarding, however my heart remains primarily as an instructor. Being able to positively change a child’s life, give them confidence in and out of the water is priceless. These are all things I wish to instill in my students, as well as my own son.

Being a lifeguard has been one of the most exciting jobs I’ve had in my life. Not only because it is a great responsibility but as well for the fun. A good lifeguard should always stand for safety, fun and being a good role model. All of which I can I promise to uphold.

Proud Parent to a beautiful son.

Amanda Wells, Swim Instructor, Bibliophile and semi-pro binge watcher

Hi there! My name is Amanda Wells and I love all things aquatic. I found my passion when I was eleven and saw Michael Phelps swim in the 2008 Summer Olympics. I immediately joined a club team and went on to become a lifeguard, swim instructor, and lifeguard instructor in college. During the school year, I teach eighth graders English Language Arts and Social Studies. My favorite thing about teaching swim lessons is seeing my students become comfortable, confident, and independent in the water.

I have been teaching swim lessons since I was 15 (it was the very first job I ever had!) and I still love it to this day. I’ve worked with babies as young as 6 months all the way up to teenagers preparing for high school swim teams. I also have taught beginning to advanced adult lessons. I am a certified personal trainer and group exercise instructor, so I love tailoring lessons to each individual! No matter the age or ability level, the best part is seeing the progress someone makes when they overcome previous obstacles, such as putting their head underwater or diving in the deep end!

Daniel Kourehjan, Swim Instructor and Lifeguard, The guard tube gladiator

Paramus, NJ

I taught swim lessons at camp and privately for the last 5 years working with children of all ages. I love helping children learn how to swim and their “aha!” moment when they finally get a stroke and become comfortable with it. I actually learned how to swim pretty early on. At the tender young age of just 4 years old I would swim on my own!

I’ve been lifeguarding for the last 8 years and teaching swim lessons for the last 5. I always keep a fun and safe environment for my patrons and love to see a smile on their faces after a job well done. Event lifeguarding is so much fun and you meet so many new and interesting people.

I serve the NYC Tri-State Areas of Paramus, Philadelphia, New York, Manalapan, among others.

David Marino, Swim Instructor, Lifeguard & Motivational Speaker

As a Miami Beach native, I’ve been enjoying our beaches and pools since I was a baby. Because everyone would tell me I was very good with kids and so comfortable in the water, I started teaching private swimming classes. I became a Lifeguard in 2015 and a Water Safety Instructor in 2016. I am told I motivate my students to improve their swimming techniques and to work hard to reach their swimming goals. I particularly like to work events as I enjoy meeting new people. I have repeat parents who call me to be a lifeguard at their kids’ parties. A fun fact about me is that I am probably one of the tallest lifeguards you can hire but can relate to your child as if I were as small as them.

David Scates, Lifeguard, Swim Instructor

Sherman Oaks

Swim Instructor role: Growing up in the West Valley with a backyard pool, I learned to swim at a young age and got into water polo during high school and college. Water sports like surfing and sailing are hobbies of mine and I first started teaching private swim lessons shortly after I started my teaching career at Hoover High School in 1996. I still currently teach Health and PE while also serving in my Coast Guard reserve unit in San Pedro as a First Class Marine Science Technician. My son in grade school has been competing for two years on a swim team and loves it. All kids should have that opportunity.

Event Lifeguard role: Aside from the last two years working for Happy Swimmers, friends and family would ask me to act as a life guard for pool parties and functions when I became Red Cross certified for water safety and CPR. A good life guard takes preventative measures to mitigate potential hazards by identifying them early before the function begins. Done properly, pool saves are few and quick. I love the anticipation of potential challenges that each venue may pose and being a part of a random family”s fun safe memories they will have.

Edson Paiz, Lifeguard LA, OC, SD and CPR Instructor

Hi, I’m Edson, a watermen who has been involved in water safety for the last 8 years. I have worked with different departments in the LA area. I have experience the open water environment (lakes and reservoirs), the ocean environment (beaches) and the pool environment. My scope continues to grow as I continue to push the envelope. I enjoy working together with people so that everyone can enjoy a hot summer day at the beach, lake and or pool.

Edson is game to travel just about anywhere in Southern CA, we kid you not. He is passionate about guarding and has taken difficult to fill jobs off the beaten track to keep kids safe. 🙂

Hannah Naten, Swim Instructor, Lifeguard, Adventure Seeker and Coffee Addict

Sacramento, CA

Hello, my name is Hannah and I have been a lifeguard for six years as well as a pool manager for two years! I started swimming competitively when I was five years old (hard to believe that that was 16 years ago!) and I am passionate about sharing my love of the water by ensuring that it is safe and fun for all those who want to enjoy it! I am also a nursing student at the moment (one more year and I will have my BSN and RN degrees) and love using my knowledge to make extra-sure that everyone is safe and having a blast at whatever event is occurring. I love lifeguarding events: I am a big people-person, I love the outdoors, and I love the water! I want to make sure whichever event I am invited to I can help the event run smoothly as well as make it enjoyable for all parties present. A fun fact about me: I just got back from 3 months in South Africa working in clinics and going on adventures, so if you want to see cool photos and videos of shark cage diving, bungee jumping and safaris, I would love to share!

I love teaching people how to swim! I have taught swim lessons for six years excluding my own personal experience with swim. I have taught between the age ranges of 6 months to 84 years old, so I am comfortable with teaching just about everything! I can teach the basics of strokes, refinement of stroke technique, as well as simply getting comfortable in the water and learning how to swim and be safe in water for the first time! Swim lessons hold a special place in my heart because I would never be who I am today if I did not having amazing instructors help me not only gain skills swimming but also making me feel comfortable with my abilities as well as gain confidence. Fun fact about me: my favorite stroke is backstroke, and my favorite race was the 200 meter back– not a popular favorite but loads of fun to me!

Fifteen years later, I am now a member of the Florida Institute of Technology University Swim Team going into my junior year. I’ve been teaching swim lessons for three years and absolutely love it. I can teach basic water safety all the way up to advanced skills and fine tuning, and just love watching swimmers progress in the activity!

Jai Norman, Swim Instructor & “The Benjamin Button of Lifeguards”

Los Angeles

Greetings, I’m Arthur! I have been a Lifeguard and Swim Instructor for over 25 years.

I’m from Chicago. I’ve had a beautiful relationship with the water since I was a child. I was on the swim team in high school and the water polo club in my neighborhood park where I first learned to swim as a child. Years later at that same park I became a Lifeguard for the Chicago Park District. I later lifeguarded and became a Swim Instructor at Richard J Daley College and also at the YMCA in Illinois and in Hollywood, California. Since 2002 I’ve been a Behavior Specialist, Lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor and CPR Instructor at a non public school in Cheviot Hills (West LA). I work with emotionally disturbed children who are diagnosed with Autism, bipolar disorder, ADHD and a host of other Mental illness and psychiatric disorders. I love the water, it’s one of the most consistent things in my life. I also love the joy of someone overcoming their fear of water and finally embracing it.

Jayne Hutcheson, Swim Instructor – full time animal lover and bookworm, part time traveler and art lover.

Washington DC

Having been a competitive swimmer for 13 years of my life, swimming is something I am incredibly passionate about! My career as a swim instructor began when I was just 14 years old. I taught private and group swim lessons at my club team to children aged 5-12 years old. After teaching private lessons for a year, my love for swim instructing expanded to coaching a SAIL swim team comprised of 90 – 120 kids aged from 4 – 18 years old. I coached the same team for 3 years, leading them to be division champions my 2nd year. While coaching I continued to teach swim lessons on the side. My private lessons ranged from children who were learning the basic building blocks of swimming (i.e. intro to water safety, putting face in water, floating, etc) to advanced competitive swimmers who needed help with stroke technique and racing strategy. I also taught swim lessons to adults, from those who just wanted to feel more comfortable in the water to those who wanted to swim in intramural teams for exercise and fun competition. One of my favorite things about teaching swim lessons is seeing the self confidence that people gain through being more comfortable in the water. Some of my favorite students have been those who were afraid to put their heads underwater, and then by the time swim lessons were over I couldn’t get them to leave the pool! I also really love teaching stroke technique to swimmers who want to improve competition form/times. My swim instructing philosophy is simple: I believe that everyone can swim! I believe that the water should never be scary, and that through positive experiences and encouragement swimming can be fun and safe for everyone.

Jenn Tyler, Past President of the Company, LGI, Lifeguard, Swim Instructor

Company founder, past CEO, with 30 years lifeguard, lifeguard instructor, and swim teaching experience

Living on Kaua’i island, Hawai’i most of the year, and traveling to Australia, Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay, and Denver regularly to lead Lifeguard Courses and CPR training, Jenn was the director of Happy Swimmers for over 32 years. It is a passion of mine to assist in the empowerment of children learning how to swim in a medium once considered a fearful, uncertain place, magically turned into a supportive, fun environment to be explored with friends. The same goes for lifeguarding and training new lifeguards–there is no greater inner joy either in saving someone’s life as a lifeguard, or teaching others how to perform lifesaving skills. It is an honor for me to watch my students grow–where once there was doubt or panic, now there is strength and confidence.

Thank you for looking to become a Happy Swimmer!

DFW

Hi there! I’m beginning a job as a speech therapist this upcoming school year, and am SO excited to spend this summer break in the pool teaching kiddos to swim! Teaching swim lessons combines two of my great loves- helping kids reach their full potential, and being in the water.

I’ve coached the 6 & under as well as older age groups on swim team for several years, as well as taught private individual and group lessons to swimmers from zero swimming ability, to swimmers needing to perfect their strokes. I think the secret to teaching kids is building trust and making their time with you FUN! Other than coaching and teaching swim I have tons of experience babysitting and working with kids of all different kinds of special needs as a Speech Pathologist.

I love helping new swimmers gain confidence in their swimming ability that allows them to be safe and have fun in the water, and would love to share my love for swimming with you and your family this summer!

Houston

My first experience teaching swim was initiation by fire. I was asked since I was a new lifeguard on my first job, if I could teach a swim lesson. That was definitely interesting. Since then, I have not only gained experience and certifications in swimming through the American Red Cross, the YMCA, USA Swimming, various swim schools, and now in conjunction with USA Triathlon and open water swimming. It is truly exciting to see someone gain confidence and the skills to achieve something not thought possible. One of my favorite races was because of the medal earned, not the swim itself!

Megan, Swim Instructor

Ladera Ranch, 10 years experience!

Swimming has always been a major part of my life. It all started with a few summer swim lessons, and before I knew it, I was competing as an age-grouper and years later as a collegiate athlete. Over the past 10 years, I’ve taught swim lessons, coached swim teams, and volunteered as a Special Olympics coach. I’ve worked with all ages (toddlers to adults) and love the challenge of meeting my swimmers exactly where they are to create an individually-tailored program that will be productive and FUN. Maybe it’s about water safety, learning the basics, gaining swim skills, building endurance, or fine-tuning stroke technique. I approach swimming – no matter the level – with the intention of inspiring a meaningful impact that will reach all areas of my swimmers’ lives. I intend to evoke a life-long love of the water and swimming through my swim instruction. Swimming is so much more than a sport – I view it as a true gift in my life, and it brings me pure joy to share it with others as a Happy Swimmers Swim Instructor.

Mo, Private Swim Instructor

Los Angeles/ Orange County

Hello, I’ve been actively teaching swim lessons for 4 years and absolutely enjoy each one of my students learning how to swim. There is nothing better than watching my students grow and become confident and comfortable in the water. I love when I establish great relationships with my students. I believe a child learns a lot more when they trust the person that is teaching them especially in the water.I am also big on moving as fast as my student would like me to in our sessions together. Lastly it is important to me that my students understand that I completely respect their space in the water. I look forward to a great summer of wonderful sessions!!!😀

Santa Monica, 40+ Years Experience

40+ years swim teaching experience! (we stopped counting after 40 🙂

Rob is also our recently retired Happy Swimmers Nationwide Swim Instructor Manager. He loves teaching in the water, and has agreed to continue serving his past years’ students on LA’s Westside: Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades, Brentwood, Westwood, Bel Air, Beverly Hills, and Hollywood Hills. He’s a busy guy, even in retirement!

His bio:

After retiring from a 25-year career with Air France at the end of 2006, Rob created a consulting company that specializes in several areas including swim instruction. He began swimming competitively in AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) meets at the age of 10. By the age of 13, he was teaching swimming to neighborhood children including those with special needs and those with a fear of water. Rob thinks that being young at heart is a reason that both children and adults trust him. “After all, swimming is fun and that is what has to be conveyed to a student. There is nothing better than seeing a smile on the face of someone who has just overcome a fear or an obstacle to fulfill a goal.” With teaching water safety and confidence as the number one priority, he individualizes each lesson to the needs of the student with emphasis on creativity and fun.

Rudyar, Private Swim Instructor & Lifeguard for Hire, lover of the arts

Hallandale Beach

Since I was a child I was always close to the water, in my adolescence I spent three years in the national swimming school in Cuba, as swimming instructor since 1996 I worked several summers in Cuba. In 2007 I went to live in Spain where I also worked as a swimming instructor in 2012 I went to live in Sardinia, Italy where I worked as a private swimming instructor for three years, I like this job because swimming is the most complete sport, it is also very important to learn to swim by your own security, there is a risk of death by drowning very high in the world, I personally think that all people should know how to swim or know how to be safe in an aquatic environment

As a lifeguard I worked two summers in Cuba, before starting in the university, where I studied pedagogy in appreciation of art. In 2007 I went to live in Spain where I also work as a lifeguard in 2012. I like lifeguarding because there is a lot of responsibility in safety of clients at beaches or pools, I like to know that I am able to react in a stressful situation, each situation is different in each place, the work dynamics are fun and also very serious

Serena Whitaker, Event Lifeguard, Swim Instructor, Bird Enthusiast, Parrot Owner and trainer

San Diego, CA

I grew up with a pool in my backyard and so I learned to love the water at a young age. I have four years of experience working as a lifeguard in indoor and outdoor settings as well as guarding summer camp events. My first lifeguard and swim instructor job was at my local YMCA back when I lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After I moved here to San Diego in 2018 I continued to work as a lifeguard and swim instructor in the much sunnier California weather! I believe that water safety is extremely important and so I do not take my job lightly. Working as a lifeguard is lots of fun because I am able to interact with many people while also having the skills and training to keep them safe around the pool!

I first started teaching swim lessons at my local YMCA in 2017. Since then I have 3 years of experience teaching private and group lessons year round. I have the most experience with preschool age groups, but I have taught many lessons from parent-child to elementary levels. The best part about teaching swim lessons is that I get to see kids grow confident in themselves and learn life-saving skills. Teaching swim lessons is so rewarding because I’ve helped many kids learn to not be afraid of the water and learn the importance of water safety.

My swim instructing background is being an assistant coach for my neighborhood swim team where I ran practices and meets working on kids technique. More recently I’ve taught lessons at an indoor pool, and worked with a wider range of ages. My specialties include teaching flutter kicks and breast stroke arms. What I like most about teaching lessons is seeing retained development in the kids swimming, a fun fact is I’ve been swimming since i was 4.

My lifeguarding background is mostly at neighborhood pools on a 2 guard system. More recently I’ve worked a 3 guard system at an indoor pool. My intention while guarding is to ensure all patron safety. What I like most about lifeguarding events is the people you meet, and a fun fact about me is I have two other triplet siblings.
