Aaliyah Malone, Lifeguard, Swim Instructor, Graphic Designer & Camper

Boston

Swim Instructor:

It is the best feeling starting with a beginner swimmer, then in some months they are able to swim on their own. I like to feel like I made a difference in someones life and I will never be forgotten. I have been teaching swim lessons just as long as I’ve been guarding, 7 years. I started with family then began working for the YMCA. I also coached a swim team for 2 years.
Fun Fact: I swam across the Boston Harbor

Lifeguard:

I grew up in the Greater Boston area, Dorchester to be specific. While my mother is petrified of the water, she made sure all her kids knew how to swim. Me being the youngest of 6, learned my swimming and guarding techniques from my siblings. At the age of 16 I began to lifeguard and I’ve been doing it since. There is a sense of comfort knowing I am in charge of peoples safety on the pool. I like to be able to prevent incidents from happening while everyone is still having fun.

Serving: Cape Cod, Rhode Island, Boston, East Boston

There is nothing more valuable than teaching a skill like swimming that will offer one a safe experience & can literally open doors to increased self-confidence & competence in any body of water—be it pool-sea-or lake. Years of coaching water polo & operating Los Angeles Jr. Lifeguard program enabled me to amass an enormous tool box of skills to help teach people of all ages to swim & handle themselves safely in the water.

As a 30 year veteran of Los Angeles County Lifeguard & Fire Dept Paramedic I know how rewarding & important maintaining a safe environment for the public & swimmers can be. Spotting & preventing danger is a learned skill that when actively applied can literally make the difference between a fun day or one wrought with tragedy. Turning people onto the stoke of water play is really a gift that should be shared with everyone.

Allen Clare| Life Guard | NYC

Allen Clare, Lifeguard, Swim Instructor

Bronx

15 years experience!

Serving the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut areas of Greater NYC.

Ever since a child I was always in the water. Being born in urban New York City my mother wanted me to learn how to swim. After completing all the learn to swim program levels, I decided to push myself further and become a lifeguard. Though I enjoy guarding, however my heart remains primarily as an instructor. Being able to positively change a child’s life, give them confidence in and out of the water is priceless. These are all things I wish to instill in my students, as well as my own son.

Being a lifeguard has been one of the most exciting jobs I’ve had in my life. Not only because it is a great responsibility but as well for the fun. A good lifeguard should always stand for safety, fun and being a good role model. All of which I can I promise to uphold.

Proud Parent to a beautiful son.

Andre Flores, Lifeguard for Hire

I’ve lifeguarded for several different facilities both in SoCal and NorCal and enjoyed the learning experience from it! I genuinely enjoy lifeguarding because of the difference we make in preventing life threatening situations. Andrew “Tre” – Lifeguard, Animal Whisperer and Aspiring Story Teller

DFW

I started lifeguarding over a decade ago in high school and I’ve continued to lifeguard off and on since then at various facilities from indoor college campuses to crowded, outdoor public pools. As a guard I’m scanning the scene constantly, I find that being proactive can help more than anything, though I’m always ready to react to the unexpected. It’s been very rewarding to see youngsters find confidence in the water and themselves, and knowing that I’m there to protect them is something I’m proud of. Pools tend to attract the wildest of critters as well, and I find that to be a perk of the job, having wrangled everything from baby bunnies to giant centipedes.

My life guarding experience started when I was just in high school. At first I was doing it for extra money so my intention was to get paid, now I take a genuine interest in the patrons of any pool whether I’m guarding or not; my goal is to make sure everyone is safe and most of all having fun and enjoying the pools’ environment. And that’s what I enjoy most because my life guarding experience now is better because I’m not worried about getting paid I’m worried about the people at the pool first then everything else will take care of itself.

Fun fact about me is I want to do a lot of things as a career so while I want to be a pool operator one day and own my own Pool Company I also want to be a producer and make beats for musicians and artists while also having a few artists skills myself. Obviously, when I was in high school, I thought I would be an NBA player when it was all said and done so I definitely dream a lot, even now as an adult.

I particularly like to work events as I enjoy meeting new people. I have repeat parents who call me to be a lifeguard at their kids’ parties. A fun fact about me is that I am probably one of the tallest lifeguards you can hire but can relate to your child as if I were as small as them.

David Scates, Lifeguard, Swim Instructor

Sherman Oaks

Swim Instructor role: Growing up in the West Valley with a backyard pool, I learned to swim at a young age and got into water polo during high school and college. Water sports like surfing and sailing are hobbies of mine and I first started teaching private swim lessons shortly after I started my teaching career at Hoover High School in 1996. I still currently teach Health and PE while also serving in my Coast Guard reserve unit in San Pedro as a First Class Marine Science Technician. My son in grade school has been competing for two years on a swim team and loves it. All kids should have that opportunity.

Event Lifeguard role: Aside from the last two years working for Happy Swimmers, friends and family would ask me to act as a life guard for pool parties and functions when I became Red Cross certified for water safety and CPR. A good life guard takes preventative measures to mitigate potential hazards by identifying them early before the function begins. Done properly, pool saves are few and quick. I love the anticipation of potential challenges that each venue may pose and being a part of a random family”s fun safe memories they will have.

Hi, I’m Demetrius Jones and I look forward to working with you. I have over 9 years experience as a lifeguard working at large, high-end resorts and hotels, as well as small private pools and parties. During that same timeframe, I also taught swim lessons for 2 1/2 years; I like helping people feel comfortable and love the water as much as I do.

Other than lifeguarding, I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Recording Arts and have a business doing musical engineering and production. I moved to sunny California earlier this year and am enjoying working here in both capacities.

Why a Lifeguard at my age? I was teaching water fitness and I asked myself would I be able to respond to a water emergency? No. I became certified within 3 months. Being in the water has always been natural to me. Lessons starting at 4 and the Swim and Dive Team by 10. Fun Water safety and being water safe that’s my motto. Being older I believe I have that extra edge. That experience, the intuition. Call it loving what you do and enjoying the moment. Anything you enjoy doing you do well.

Hannah Naten, Swim Instructor, Lifeguard, Adventure Seeker and Coffee Addict

Sacramento, CA

Hello, my name is Hannah and I have been a lifeguard for six years as well as a pool manager for two years! I started swimming competitively when I was five years old (hard to believe that that was 16 years ago!) and I am passionate about sharing my love of the water by ensuring that it is safe and fun for all those who want to enjoy it! I am also a nursing student at the moment (one more year and I will have my BSN and RN degrees) and love using my knowledge to make extra-sure that everyone is safe and having a blast at whatever event is occurring. I love lifeguarding events: I am a big people-person, I love the outdoors, and I love the water! I want to make sure whichever event I am invited to I can help the event run smoothly as well as make it enjoyable for all parties present. A fun fact about me: I just got back from 3 months in South Africa working in clinics and going on adventures, so if you want to see cool photos and videos of shark cage diving, bungee jumping and safaris, I would love to share!

I love teaching people how to swim! I have taught swim lessons for six years excluding my own personal experience with swim. I have taught between the age ranges of 6 months to 84 years old, so I am comfortable with teaching just about everything! I can teach the basics of strokes, refinement of stroke technique, as well as simply getting comfortable in the water and learning how to swim and be safe in water for the first time! Swim lessons hold a special place in my heart because I would never be who I am today if I did not having amazing instructors help me not only gain skills swimming but also making me feel comfortable with my abilities as well as gain confidence. Fun fact about me: my favorite stroke is backstroke, and my favorite race was the 200 meter back– not a popular favorite but loads of fun to me!

Company owner with 30 years lifeguard, lifeguard instructor, and swim teaching experience

Living on Kaua’i island, Hawai’i most of the year, and traveling to Australia, Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay, and Houston regularly to lead Lifeguard Courses and CPR training, Jenn has been the director of Happy Swimmers for over 28 years. It is a passion to assist in the empowerment of children learning how to swim in a medium once considered a fearful, uncertain place, magically turned into a supportive, fun environment to be explored with friends. The same goes for lifeguarding and training new lifeguards–there is no greater inner joy either in saving someone’s life as a lifeguard, or teaching others how to perform lifesaving skills. It is an honor for me to watch my students grow–where once there was doubt or panic, now there is strength and confidence.

Thank you for looking to become a Happy Swimmer!

Jeremy Percy, Lifeguard, Resident wave shredding protege and cat father

Orange, CA

Jeremy has a background in varsity water polo and swim so he is an excellent swimmer. On top of that his only concern when lifeguarding is the safety of those in and around the pool. He himself has been told many times by lifeguards to slow down on the pool deck. He knows the excitement that can lead to accidents, and hence how to spot and prevent them. In his free time he enjoys surfing, eating, singing, being annoying, and playing with his cat “Lil boo”.

Karsten Gunia, Event Lifeguard, Full Time Brother and Gym Rat

San Antonio

Lifeguarding has always been an important part of my life since I started my journey as a YMCA Lifeguard when I turned 16. One of the main reasons I decided to become a lifeguard is because my mother who is a nurse, had to save a 3 year old drowing victim and perform CPR for nearly 6 minutes until the paramedics arrived. This child drowned under the watch of lifeguards and if my mom was not there, that young child would have most likely not survived. Being a head lifeguard along with my sister, who is also a head lifegaurd at the YMCA, we are able to enstill the importance of our jobs to the young 16 year old lifeguards at the pools we work at. This is so that nothing of the same nature happens to anyone under my or my guard’s watch.

Kendrick Perry, Lifeguard for Hire

DFW

Hello, my name is Kendrick. I’m a recently Certified American Red Cross Lifeguard. In addition to my day job, as a Fixed Income Specialist, I am an Assistant Scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop 773 in Irving, TX. I made the decision to become a Lifeguard after completing BSA Aquatic Supervision & Water Rescue Training. I developed a love for swimming as a form of exercise following 20+ years as an amateur cyclist, and the addition of a few extra pounds. An important component of safety comes from “Being Prepared” (Scout’s Motto) for emergencies should they occur, but perhaps more practically, Prevention. I have over 6 years experience working with kids through scouting, and believe in living the 12 points of the Scout Law (ask me to recite them sometime ;). As a business professional, I strongly believe in providing excellent client service, and developing lasting relationships by treating individuals the way I expect to be treated.

In addition to the above certifications, I am Red Cross Certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED. I’m Originally from Lafayette, Louisiana and have been living in the DFW area since 1995. I completed my Bachelor’s in 1991 at University of Southwestern LA. I Eventually earned my MBA at University of Dallas in 2002. When not involved with work or scouting, you’ll likely find me either in the pool, on the bike, or thinking about one of the above. Other interest include cooking (indoors & out), geocaching, and in general pushing myself to learn and do new things; rest is good too 🙂

Having a qualified and responsible Lifeguard is very important in keeping kids and adults safe at your events. I’m very honored to be part of the Happy Swimmers Guard Staff!

I look forward to working with you!!!

Hi, my name is Maggie and I’ve been teaching swim lessons for 4 years with ages 6 months to 12 years old. I’ve also worked with children for 7 years as a tutor, nanny, babysitter and mentor while working towards a bachelors degree in 2021. I love working with children and making a difference much like many mentors did for me. Before becoming a lifeguard, I was a member of a local swim team for 10 years.

I have also been a lifeguard for 4 years. I began my love for water growing up in and around a pool starting swim team at age 5 and continuing until age 15 when I became a lifeguard. I have a passion for water and water sports as they have always been a part of my life and I would like to share my passion while reinforcing safety in a fun environment. My favorite part about lifeguarding events is getting to know new people and watching others share my passion and love for water.

I’ve played many sports throughout my youth.  I swam and played water polo throughout high school.  I also played other sports outside of school such as soccer, football, and baseball. I began to lifeguard my first year after high school.  I taught swim lessons to kids from the ages of 5-12.  I really enjoyed working with the kids, they always made my day.  It’s truly an amazing feeling knowing you played a big part in teaching a child a valuable lesson that goes a long way. Swimming is a life skill you must learn in my opinion sort of like riding a bike. I take great passion in what I do and safety always comes first.

Lifeguarding in the Summer is one of the best jobs for a college student I believe. What’s more fun then being by the water and soaking in the sun in the midst of Summer? I remember going to the pool every summer and talking to the lifeguards. I always thought they looked so cool and what kid didn’t want to be cool? I have guarded for a little more then a year now and I can honestly say I love it knowing the importance of saving one’s life or being able to prevent a terrible accident is a very important job. Makes you feel like a bit of a hero.

Rudyar, Private Swim Instructor & Lifeguard for Hire, lover of the arts

Hallandale Beach

Since I was a child I was always close to the water, in my adolescence I spent three years in the national swimming school in Cuba, as swimming instructor since 1996 I worked several summers in Cuba. In 2007 I went to live in Spain where I also worked as a swimming instructor in 2012 I went to live in Sardinia, Italy where I worked as a private swimming instructor for three years, I like this job because swimming is the most complete sport, it is also very important to learn to swim by your own security, there is a risk of death by drowning very high in the world, I personally think that all people should know how to swim or know how to be safe in an aquatic environment

As a lifeguard I worked two summers in Cuba, before starting in the university, where I studied pedagogy in appreciation of art. In 2007 I went to live in Spain where I also work as a lifeguard in 2012. I like lifeguarding because there is a lot of responsibility in safety of clients at beaches or pools, I like to know that I am able to react in a stressful situation, each situation is different in each place, the work dynamics are fun and also very serious

I wanted to become a lifeguard because I always thought the idea of being able to save someone whether it be in or out of the water was extremely valuable and kind of cool. BLS, CPR, and the ability to stay calm when something serious is happening is something that you will never forget. My favorite part is being able to connect with people and make their day that much better because there are less people to go to.

Sarah Isela, Lifeguard for Hire, Wellness Coach & Hiking fanatic

Crownsville

Hi, my name is Sarah Isela! There is a quote about lifeguards that says, “A lifeguard is like a storm shelter, you may never need it, but if you do it can be a lifesaver.” During my seven years of lifeguarding, I have been the storm shelter and lifesaver to countless people. My 7 year lifeguarding career began in 2013, when I received my American Red Cross Lifeguard certification. Since then, I have gained an incredible amount of experience lifeguarding every year: 2013-2015 at an indoor aquatic center (North Arundel Aquatic Center), 2015-2018 as the beach “Baywatch” of Sandy Point State Park, and 2018-present as a private event lifeguard with Happy Swimmers USA. When I lifeguard, I work to the best of my ability to ensure the safety of everyone. If the time comes that I must become your “lifesaver,” you are in good hands. I have handled over 100 water assists, as well as four serious water rescues over the past five years. I have even received the Superintendent’s Award from the Natural Resources Police (NRP) for assisting in a water rescue of 5 people from a jet skiing accident in the Chesapeake Bay. This is my third year lifeguarding for events, and I look forward to working with you to ensure the safety of all your swimmers!

Serena Whitaker, Event Lifeguard, Swim Instructor, Bird Enthusiast, Parrot Owner and trainer

San Diego, CA

I grew up with a pool in my backyard and so I learned to love the water at a young age. I have four years of experience working as a lifeguard in indoor and outdoor settings as well as guarding summer camp events. My first lifeguard and swim instructor job was at my local YMCA back when I lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After I moved here to San Diego in 2018 I continued to work as a lifeguard and swim instructor in the much sunnier California weather! I believe that water safety is extremely important and so I do not take my job lightly. Working as a lifeguard is lots of fun because I am able to interact with many people while also having the skills and training to keep them safe around the pool!

I first started teaching swim lessons at my local YMCA in 2017. Since then I have 3 years of experience teaching private and group lessons year round. I have the most experience with preschool age groups, but I have taught many lessons from parent-child to elementary levels. The best part about teaching swim lessons is that I get to see kids grow confident in themselves and learn life-saving skills. Teaching swim lessons is so rewarding because I’ve helped many kids learn to not be afraid of the water and learn the importance of water safety.
