Ever since a child I was always in the water. Being born in urban New York City my mother wanted me to learn how to swim. After completing all the learn to swim program levels, I decided to push myself further and become a lifeguard. Though I enjoy guarding, however my heart remains primarily as an instructor. Being able to positively change a child’s life, give them confidence in and out of the water is priceless. These are all things I wish to instill in my students, as well as my own son.

Being a lifeguard has been one of the most exciting jobs I’ve had in my life. Not only because it is a great responsibility but as well for the fun. A good lifeguard should always stand for safety, fun and being a good role model. All of which I can I promise to uphold.

I am a college student attending the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). I started lifeguarding with the YMCA in my hometown, Houston, TX and fell in love with my job there. Although lifeguarding involves being vigilant for long periods, I love the environment and being outside where people are having fun! I have been lifeguarding for 4 years along with being certified as a swim lessons instructor and lifeguard instructor with the YMCA of Greater Houston.

I started lifeguarding at my neighborhood pool and found post-season employment at Goldfish Swim School. The little kids I worked with there were great and I even enjoyed working with the babies (despite the crying). I stumbled upon Happy Swimmers as I was looking for new ways to use my certification. I feel fortunate to have found such a flexible workplace with such a great staff! This is my second year with Happy Swimmers. The families and clients I work with are always friendly and courteous. Hard to say how many times I’ve been thrown in the pool at birthday parties! I just renewed my certification and plan to continue summers with Happy Swimmers until I graduate college. Hi, my name is Blake & I’ve been lifegaurding for 4 years. I started at one of the biggest pools in the United States & took it to the next level with ocean rescue. I love guarding any and all bodies of water to ensure swimmers are having a good, fun & relaxed time. Safety for swimmers, beach goers, & pool patrons is my #1 priority. I’ve always loved guarding because of the lifestyle, the sun, & the vibe. my office is water front everyday all day long. & everyone is always happy to see a lifegaurd even when they aren’t in need. A fun fact about me when I’m not at the beach I’m back in the mountains shredding some slopes on my snow skis! I’ve been skiing since I was a kid & it is one of my favorite passions!

I was introduced to guarding in 1973 when I finally passed a gruesome endurance test to become a lifeguard at a NJ state park on the ocean. Gruesome because the distance and sprint swims were in 64 degree water. I worked 3 summers, took 2 off, and returned for a 4th year. I also guarded at a lake owned by the university I was attending in Florida over the winters. Most recently, I renewed by lifeguard cert and began working at a local Y in October 2021 and have been working part time since then. I enjoy my coworkers and the Y community and try to make everyone’s experience at the pool as welcoming and safe as possible.

My life guarding experience started when I was just in high school. At first I was doing it for extra money so my intention was to get paid, now I take a genuine interest in the patrons of any pool whether I’m guarding or not; my goal is to make sure everyone is safe and most of all having fun and enjoying the pools’ environment. And that’s what I enjoy most because my life guarding experience now is better because I’m not worried about getting paid I’m worried about the people at the pool first then everything else will take care of itself.

Fun fact about me is I want to do a lot of things as a career so while I want to be a pool operator one day and own my own Pool Company I also want to be a producer and make beats for musicians and artists while also having a few artists skills myself. Obviously, when I was in high school, I thought I would be an NBA player when it was all said and done so I definitely dream a lot, even now as an adult.

I have lifeguarded at Mandalay Bay, which is one of the largest pool complex’s in Las Vegas. It contains 3 individual pools, a wave pool, and a lazy river, so I have experience keeping an eye on small, large, and moving pools. My intention in guarding is to make sure everybody is having a fun, and safe time. People are meant to have fun in the pool, but there are essential rules that need to be followed. What I love most about lifeguarding is being outside enjoying the weather, ensuring everybody else is having a great and safe time. A fun fact about me is I love jet skiing and hope to have my own one day.

Hi I’m Bryan, and I have been guarding for one year. I was always in the water when I was younger, not coming in till the sun went down. Lifeguarding is a passion for me since I always love being near the water. I really enjoy paddle boarding as I feel like it helps me clear my mind when I’m out there gazing at the water. I plan to go to medical school and be a psychiatrist. I am currently trying to learn German and Russian as well as computer programming.

I work at the Rockwall ISD aquatic center. I have worked private parties before Happy Swimmers and fairly enjoyed it. Being a lifeguard is rewarding, you get to keep others safe while also harnessing the ability to focus. I know the importance of lifeguards as I am also a Swimmer and Water Polo player.

Hello my name is Dano (Day-Noh),
I have been Lifeguarding for close to 5 years and have always loved the water ever since I took swim lessons as a kid. My intention is to prevent any life threatening injuries while on duty and educate pool patrons about safety in or out of the water. As a Miami Beach native, I’ve been enjoying our beaches and pools since I was a baby. Because everyone would tell me I was very good with kids and so comfortable in the water, I started teaching private swimming classes. Swim Instructor role: Growing up in the West Valley with a backyard pool, I learned to swim at a young age and got into water polo during high school and college. Water sports like surfing and sailing are hobbies of mine and I first started teaching private swim lessons shortly after I started my teaching career at Hoover High School in 1996. I still currently teach Health and PE while also serving in my Coast Guard reserve unit in San Pedro as a First Class Marine Science Technician. My son in grade school has been competing for two years on a swim team and loves it. All kids should have that opportunity.

Event Lifeguard role: Aside from the last two years working for Happy Swimmers, friends and family would ask me to act as a life guard for pool parties and functions when I became Red Cross certified for water safety and CPR. A good life guard takes preventative measures to mitigate potential hazards by identifying them early before the function begins. Done properly, pool saves are few and quick. I love the anticipation of potential challenges that each venue may pose and being a part of a random family”s fun safe memories they will have.

Hi, my name is Dean! I have been a lifeguard for three years now. I was first introduced to lifeguarding in the 8th grade, when I became a junior lifeguard. Lifeguarding is a huge responsibility, but it’s the best because I get to meet new people. My intention as a lifeguard is to keep the pool I am watching safe, as everyone is having a blast. Debbie is a graduate of CSUN with a background in teaching Physical Education and Special Education for students with Specific Learning Disabilities. She had worked for LAUSD as a teacher for 37.5 years. She has also been a Professional Lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Training Instructor with the American Red Cross and LAUSD. She has taught First Aid and CPR for over 30 years and feels that it is important to give back to the community. She has a strong background in working with the community in planning and scheduling events for the Civic Center Division for LAUSD.  Debbie is excited to be a part of the Instructor Team for JTA CPR and looks forward to being part of the expanding Management Team of Happy Swimmers. In her free time, Debbie loves to hike, ski where ever there is snow, swim and travel.

Hi, I’m Demetrius Jones and I look forward to working with you. I have over 9 years experience as a lifeguard working at large, high-end resorts and hotels, as well as small private pools and parties. I’m outgoing and personable, and enjoy working in all environments. I look forward to helping make sure everyone has a fantastic time, but is safe in the process.

4+ years of my experience was managing a therapy pool where we supported people with injuries, special needs and the elderly. My experience there (and prior experience) has helped me develop the ability to customize my approach to meet each person’s needs. During that same timeframe, I also taught swim lessons for 2 1/2 years; I like helping people feel comfortable and love the water as much as I do.

Other than lifeguarding, I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Recording Arts and have a business doing musical engineering and production. I moved to sunny California earlier this year and am enjoying working here in both capacities.

I love teaching people how to swim! I have taught swim lessons for six years excluding my own personal experience with swim. I have taught between the age ranges of 6 months to 84 years old, so I am comfortable with teaching just about everything! Greetings, I’m Arthur! I have been a Lifeguard and Swim Instructor for over 25 years.

I’m from Chicago. I’ve had a beautiful relationship with the water since I was a child. I was on the swim team in high school and the water polo club in my neighborhood park where I first learned to swim as a child. Years later at that same park I became a Lifeguard for the Chicago Park District. I later lifeguarded and became a Swim Instructor at Richard J Daley College and also at the YMCA in Illinois and in Hollywood, California. Since 2002 I’ve been a Behavior Specialist, Lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor and CPR Instructor at a non public school in Cheviot Hills (West LA). I work with emotionally disturbed children who are diagnosed with Autism, bipolar disorder, ADHD and a host of other Mental illness and psychiatric disorders. I love the water, it’s one of the most consistent things in my life. I also love the joy of someone overcoming their fear of water and finally embracing it.

I have been a lifeguard since I was 16 years old, which was in 2016. I moved from Louisville, KY to Fort Lauderdale, FL in 2018 for college, and have not been able to leave South Florida since! Hello, my name is Kendrick. I’m a recently Certified American Red Cross Lifeguard. In addition to my day job, as a Fixed Income Specialist, I am an Assistant Scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop 773 in Irving, TX. I made the decision to become a Lifeguard after completing BSA Aquatic Supervision & Water Rescue Training. I developed a love for swimming as a form of exercise following 20+ years as an amateur cyclist, and the addition of a few extra pounds. An important component of safety comes from “Being Prepared” (Scout’s Motto) for emergencies should they occur, but perhaps more practically, Prevention. I have over 6 years experience working with kids through scouting, and believe in living the 12 points of the Scout Law (ask me to recite them sometime ;). As a business professional, I strongly believe in providing excellent client service, and developing lasting relationships by treating individuals the way I expect to be treated.

In addition to the above certifications, I am Red Cross Certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED. I’m Originally from Lafayette, Louisiana and have been living in the DFW area since 1995. I am the recipient of the Autism Speaks grant to provide free swim lessons to autistic children. Currently I am certified as a Water Safety Instructor Trainer where I have taught individuals to be swim instructors. I started one of the early baby swim programs in the United States in order to teach babies to swim float swim. I currently serve on the Board of Directors for the State of Florida to approve new aquatic programs. I love all levels of instruction.

Most of my lifeguarding experience has been in and around country clubs since 2020 and i loved it so much that i joined happy swimmers in 2021. I wanted to guard events outside of work so that i could meet new people that i otherwise wouldn’t have the chance to! Before that i was working as a swim instructor and as much as i loved teaching the little ones, it was too much on my ears and i couldn’t be in the water every day like i wanted to. That’s why lifeguarding was the perfect amount of enjoying the water while also being able to keep my ears dry (for the most part at least haha). I’ve worked my way up and now i’m an aquatics director and have the opportunity to still work events whenever i get the chance to. As a former competitive swimmer of eight years and a current water polo player, I am extremely aware of the importance of water safety. I was a member of the Freeport Devils Travel Swim Team for 8 years, obtained my Junior Lifeguard Certification at 14 and have been swimming since I was 3 years old. My first experience teaching swim was initiation by fire. I was asked since I was a new lifeguard on my first job, if I could teach a swim lesson. That was definitely interesting. Since then, I have not only gained experience and certifications in swimming through the American Red Cross, the YMCA, USA Swimming, various swim schools, and now in conjunction with USA Triathlon and open water swimming. It is truly exciting to see someone gain confidence and the skills to achieve something not thought possible. One of my favorite races was because of the medal earned, not the swim itself!

Hey there! My name’s Nathan Wilson, and I’m an indoor lifeguard with just over 1 year of experience. Since I work year round, I’ve had over 60 hours of inservice training and 1000+ hours on duty. I’ve always viewed lifeguarding as a way of giving back to my community, especially after almost becoming a drowning victim myself. When I was 5 years old I jumped into the deep end of a friend’s pool at a party. In a backyard of 20+ people the person that recognized what was happening was my father, who quickly jumped into action to drag me up from the bottom of the pool. An accident can occur in the blink of an eye, and as a lifeguard my duty is to prevent those accidents from becoming fatal.

Since I was a child I was always close to the water, in my adolescence I spent three years in the national swimming school in Cuba, as swimming instructor since 1996 I worked several summers in Cuba. In 2007 I went to live in Spain where I also worked as a swimming instructor in 2012 I went to live in Sardinia, Italy where I worked as a private swimming instructor for three years, I like this job because swimming is the most complete sport, it is also very important to learn to swim by your own security, there is a risk of death by drowning very high in the world, I personally think that all people should know how to swim or know how to be safe in an aquatic environment

Hi, my name is Sarah Isela! There is a quote about lifeguards that says, “A lifeguard is like a storm shelter, you may never need it, but if you do it can be a lifesaver.” During my seven years of lifeguarding, I have been the storm shelter and lifesaver to countless people. My 7 year lifeguarding career began in 2013, when I received my American Red Cross Lifeguard certification. Since then, I have gained an incredible amount of experience lifeguarding every year: 2013-2015 at an indoor aquatic center (North Arundel Aquatic Center), 2015-2018 as the beach “Baywatch” of Sandy Point State Park, and 2018-present as a private event lifeguard with Happy Swimmers USA. When I lifeguard, I work to the best of my ability to ensure the safety of everyone. If the time comes that I must become your “lifesaver,” you are in good hands. I have handled over 100 water assists, as well as four serious water rescues over the past five years. I have even received the Superintendent’s Award from the Natural Resources Police (NRP) for assisting in a water rescue of 5 people from a jet skiing accident in the Chesapeake Bay. This is my third year lifeguarding for events, and I look forward to working with you to ensure the safety of all your swimmers!

This is my second year lifeguarding and I’m really excited to guard again this year. I love to be able to provide the sense of security to family’s and swimmers while they are in the pool. I grew up with a pool in my backyard and so I learned to love the water at a young age. I have four years of experience working as a lifeguard in indoor and outdoor settings as well as guarding summer camp events. My first lifeguard and swim instructor job was at my local YMCA back when I lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After I moved here to San Diego in 2018 I continued to work as a lifeguard and swim instructor in the much sunnier California weather! I believe that water safety is extremely important and so I do not take my job lightly. Working as a lifeguard is lots of fun because I am able to interact with many people while also having the skills and training to keep them safe around the pool!

I first started teaching swim lessons at my local YMCA in 2017. Since then I have 3 years of experience teaching private and group lessons year round. I have the most experience with preschool age groups, but I have taught many lessons from parent-child to elementary levels. The best part about teaching swim lessons is that I get to see kids grow confident in themselves and learn life-saving skills. My background is in the legal profession working as a legal secretary for many years. I stopped working to raise two children who are now young adults. My daughter is a teacher in the Portland school district, and my son is an artist who lives on the East coast. For twenty of those years, I worked with at-risk students and students with special needs at the secondary level. These students resided in a residential facility, and I worked closely not only with the entire school staff but with the social workers and staff at the residential placement. I have worked as a swim instructor for 3 years and it is one of the most fun jobs that I have had. I love helping children gain confidence in the pool. I have been a lifeguard in the DMV area since 2019. I have worked at different communities, gyms, hotels, and apartment complexes. Through my experience I have learned how to balance safety and fun for all pool patrons. I will admit that at first I was overly cautious (better safe than sorry) but after some time I was able to create an enjoyable environment for everyone. I enjoy working as a lifeguard because I love seeing families enjoy their time in the summer by the pool. I think learning to swim and being in the water is a valuable skill that everyone should be able to participate in safely. I grew up in Saudi Arabia and as you can imagine it was HOT! at least 6 months out of the year were spent in the pool with friends and I can attribute some of my best memories to those experiences. Since 2010, I have been working with children in various aquatic and academic environments. I enjoy working with children because I am patient and creative. There is nothing more satisfying that seeing a child learn something new and feel good about the process. I played JV swim team and water polo for four years in high school.

Lifeguarding is my second career! I retired from the Army in 2018 following a rewarding career as an Army Dietitian. Since then I have been teaching adults to swim at Life Time Athletics and Lifeguard for Happy Swimmers!!! My military background has served me well for my current position. I love serving my community and praise God I am in a position where I might be able to prevent a tragedy.

Hi! My name is Valerie and I’ve been lifeguarding for 1 year, my goal is to gain more experience and still have fun while doing it. I love to swim and I love being outdoors so lifeguarding felt like the perfect fit!

My swim instructing background is being an assistant coach for my neighborhood swim team where I ran practices and meets working on kids technique. More recently I’ve taught lessons at an indoor pool, and worked with a wider range of ages. My specialties include teaching flutter kicks and breast stroke arms. What I like most about teaching lessons is seeing retained development in the kids swimming, a fun fact is I’ve been swimming since i was 4.

My lifeguarding background is mostly at neighborhood pools on a 2 guard system. More recently I’ve worked a 3 guard system at an indoor pool. My intention while guarding is to ensure all patron safety. What I like most about lifeguarding events is the people you meet, and a fun fact about me is I have two other triplet siblings.

Having worked as a lifeguard for a variety of facilities including beach resorts, swim teams and municipal pools, I understand the changing demands of lifeguarding for different types of clients, events and swimmers. I’ve been able to apply my experience as a free diver on the reefs of South Florida and a USA swim coach to lifeguarding, allowing me to create a fun, enjoyable and most importantly safe environment for swimmers of all ages and experience levels.

Hey I’m Xerxes! I’m an auto mechanic/ lifeguard (as you probably might’ve guessed) and I’ve lived in Los Angeles my whole life. I chose this career because of my interest in the medical field, and swimming of course. Swimming in the ocean has been my favorite weekend activity for quite some time, so I’ve been gaining experience as a lifeguard so that eventually I can patrol the California coast.
