Red Cross CPR and Lifeguard (LGI) Instructor Course

This Water Safety Instructor Course (WSI) in 3 days teaches people how to be safe in, on, and around water and to teach individuals of different ages and abilities how to swim. In a logical progression, the program covers the knowledge and skills needed for aquatic skill development. As participants develop these skills, they become safer and better swimmers. The instructor course is designed to train instructor candidates to teach Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, Learn to Swim, Adult Swim, and water safety courses and presentations.

Happy Swimmers is pleased to provide organizations such as municipalities, educational facilities, and camps settings the opportunity to conduct this Water Safety Instructor Course (WSI) training program at their own facility. The training program is ideal for any public or private agency wishing to train individuals to teach all levels of swimming including group and private lessons. Water safety courses and presentations are ideal for daycare, schools, camps, and homeowner associations. Basic Water Rescue often a requirement for a therapeutic specialist when working in an aquatic environment.

During the class candidates will practice assessing and providing feedback on strokes and aquatic skills. Candidates will learn how to use the resources and lesson plans to conduct a successful swim program. Candidates will learn how to conduct group and individual lessons. Implement the training program according to the Red Cross standards. Candidates must pass the written test with 80% or better.

Class Size

Class size ranges between 6 and 10 students.  There is a 6 participant minimum to conduct the training in order to practice group teaching. In the event you wish to proceed with less than 6, the minimum base price based on 6 will be divided between the participants. If you are a host organization then you may want to consider opening the course to the community in an attempt to meet the minimum class size. 

If the facility is 5 feet or less then the Basic Swim Instructor course will be implemented which will address all of the above with the exception of the Learn to Swim Level 4 – 6 courses.

Water Safety Instructor Course Cost

The cost per individual is $454. If students pay individually, once 6 students pay for the Water Safety Instructor Course (WSI) on the registration link we will provide, the class is guaranteed to run on your chosen dates. If the organization pays either by check, credit card, or purchase order, again, our 6 student minimum fee will secure your dates.  We are mobile nationwide, however, more remote areas may need either a higher minimum student count or a travel fee. If the class host cancels the class, refunds are given only if requested in writing by email greater than 21 days before class.  After your class, your instructor course will need to be paid in full before the student’s new Red Cross WSI certificates are released.  Covid 19 induced cancellations are of course honored.

Course Set-Up

The 2021 Water Safety Instructor Course (WSI) is a blended learning offering with an initial 7-hour online content. This is followed up with a 25-hour in-person session.

In order to process the online offering through the American Red Cross and to arrange travel for the Instructor Trainer, a 4-week advanced notice is required. This will allow candidates optimal time to complete the online training and practice skills for the class.

Kimberly Lytle – American Red Cross Instructor Trainer (WSIT, LGIT)

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Course instructor, LGI course Instructor Kimberly Kimberly Lytle has over 40 years of experience in the field of aquatics. She is a lifeguard, Lifeguard Instructor, Lifeguard Instructor Trainer, Water Safety Instructor/Instructor Trainer, Wilderness First Aid Instructor, and CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor. Kimberly was recognized as the Instructor of the Year by the American Red Cross.

Kimberly served on the Board of Directors for the Florida Aquatic Council. She is active with the State of Florida Health Department overseeing the field of aquatics. Kimberly served 10 years at the National Aquatic Safety Company International Aquatic School as an Instructor Trainer.  As an educator for the past 30 years in the Osceola County District Schools, Kimberly was the Teacher of the Year for her middle school and place in the Top Ten Educators for the District.

Kimberly has provided valuable training to facilities such as The City of Kissimmee, The City of Saint Cloud, Tampa VA Hospital, Osceola Sheriff’s Department, Haines City, JW Marriott, Columbia School District, Gallaudet University, and Patrick Air Force Base.

Kimberly was awarded the Autism Speaks grant providing free swim lessons for individuals with Autism. In addition, Kimberly was first certified in the 1970s as a “Handicapped Swim Instructor” by Louise Priest, a well-known educator in the field of special needs swimming. Kimberly has continued to maintain her specialist certification with the Marino Adapted Aquatics Certification and the Human Kinetics Adapted Aquatics certification. She is a Tier 2 Special Olympics Swim Coach.
